Change in How Spam is Handled at The Pike School

SpamWarsPoster

Starting July 20th, most of your spam will not make it to the spam link under “4 more”.  Instead it will be held in quarantine. Below are two ways to check what has been quarantined.

Option 1

Each day, you will receive an email called a Quarantine Summary around 6am that lists the messages held in quarantine.

1.  If all of the messages in the list are spam you can delete the Quarantine Summary.
2.  If you want to check the content of the message, click on the subject.
3.  If you want to have the message delivered to your inbox, click on the “Message Center” link in the upper right.
4.  Once in the Message Center, click on the appropriate tab at the top and then click the deliver button next to the message.
Option 2
You can check your quarantined messages at anytime in the Message Center by following the directions below.
1.  Go to the following link http://login.postini.com/a/pikeschool.org
2.  Login with the same username and password you use for Pike School Gmail account.
3.  Once in the Message Center, click on the appropriate tab at the top and then click the deliver button next to the message.

Gmail: Delete or Print Just One Message in a Conversation

How do I delete or print just one message in a conversation rather than everything in a converstaion?  This question has a come up a couple of times since we started using gmail.

Open the specific email you want to print or delete.  In the picture below, I have opened the 4th message in a string of 7 messages.  Then I clicked the triangle next to the reply button on the 4th message.  I get a set of options that will act upon the 4th message only.  One of them is delete and one of them is print.  Click the one you want.

PLN

http://blog.discoveryeducation.com/p_naugle

If your looking to explore technology and education a bit and don’t want to go to a workshop, you can try the PLN (personal learning network) Challenge sponsored by Edublogs.  They will be publishing 2 or 3 post per week for 30 days about setting up, enhancing, and participating in your very own personal learning network. This would be a great way to explore what a personal learning network is and think about how you could use it for professional development as well as in your classroom.  The beauty of this is that you can do it on your own schedule.  Also, you don’t even have to do it this month.  Just save the link read the posts when you have time.  Here’s the link.

Personal Learning Network

PLNhttp://blog.discoveryeducation.com/p_naugle

What is a PLN?

a group of people who can guide your learning, point you to learning opportunities, answer your questions, and give you the benefit of their own knowledge and experience… to provide us not only with pointers to sources of information, but to answer questions, to coach us, to reinforce our learning when we try to apply it to our work. – Daniel R. Tobin

A PLN can include fellow students, teachers, parents, friends, and relatives.  Because of the Internet your PLN can include people that live in your town but can also include people who live across the World.  We will use some web based tools to help us extend our PLN beyond Pike School’s borders.  Below is a list of some of the tools we will investigate.

  • RSS Feeds
  • Blogs
  • Skype – Voice over IP, texting, video chatting
  • Diigo – social bookmarking and research tool
  • Podcasts – a series of audio and video content that can be downloaded to a computer or ipod
  • Twitter – micro blogging – shorts updates of 140 characters or less about and idea, a question, or what your doing.
  • Google Docs – online word processing
  • Flickr – photo sharing
  • VoiceThread – allows for conversations around a picture, video, document, or audio
  • Youtube – vidoe sharing website
  • Livebinders – online 3 ring binder.  You can organize website, pictures, videos, documents all in one place
  • Wikis – a website that allows for easy creation of websites that can be edited via a web browser
  • Facebook – social networking site
