By working at it each and every day. It begins the first week of school when students lay out their hopes and dreams for the year and establish rules to live by for the classroom, playground, and hallways. However, faculty realized that even in common areas students mostly spend time with classmates from their grades. To make the Middle School more inclusive, this year we established “Middle School Buddies.” These links crossed grades, tying third, fourth, and fifth graders together. Our first of several meetings took place in November. Students discovered what they had in common—from favorite movie to hometown and birth order. They now have more familiar faces to greet each day and hopefully feelings of a stronger, more inclusive community.
