The Time for Hope

by Head of Upper School Colleen Welsh

The world is a complicated place to navigate these days.  Just watching the news on a regular basis can leave one reeling.  It becomes difficult to maintain a sense of hope and optimism and yet, it is when we feel most unsure, afraid and under siege that we must find the courage to hope.

This summer I was introduced to the book, Heart! Fully Forming Your Professional Life as a Teacher and Leader, by Timothy D. Kanold.  This book has been a powerful tool that has helped reconnect me with the truth that I leave a “heart print” with each student, colleague, and family with whom I share the year.  I realized that our ability to change the dynamic in our country and truly impact the world begins with attending to our heart.  Kanold quotes Vaclav Havel who says, “The salvation of this human world lies nowhere else than in the human heart, in the human power to reflect, in human meekness and human responsibility.”

This truth gives me hope.

At Pike, we are endeavoring to help young people become whole hearted individuals.  Kanold quotes Bene Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston college of social work, who describes whole hearted living as; “…engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness.  It means cultivating the courage, compassion and connection to wake up in the morning and think,….I am enough.  It’s going to bed at night thinking, Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.

Hope comes from supporting young people to become whole hearted individuals who are compassionate, courageous and truly believe they are enough and worthy of love and belonging.

Hope comes from recognizing that you make an impact.  As educators and care givers, we have the privilege and responsibility to support young people in becoming intentional about the impact they want to have.

Hope comes from the belief that no matter how great our political divides or how catastrophic the events are that unfold around us, if we can build communities of people who feel worthy, that they are enough, who understand the power they have to create change and make an impact and have the courage and will to dialogue with others in a spirit of problem-solving, our hearts will find their way back to each other.
